Green Gold began with a journey to Humboldt County, California, in 2014. Dutch photographer Steef Fleur, intrigued by stories about California’s flourishing semi-legal cannabis industry, visited several farms in the area. An experience that changed her view on cannabis and its consumers and resulted in a documentary photography book called Humboldt - Green Gold U.S.A. that she made in collaboration with journalist Martin van de Velde.

Awakened to the medicinal and industrial possibilities of cannabis, Steef began to see past its negative drug associated image and began to recognize it as a natural resource that can change our world. In 2014 she launched Green Gold Stories. A photography/blog project in collaboration with journalists Martin van de Velde and Nina Vera, aimed at breaking the stonerstigma associated with cannabis and its consumers by portraying ordinary people producing and using cannabis on a daily basis. It also seeks to raise awareness about cannabis and its potential as a natural resource for creating a more sustainable world.

CONTRIBUTERS

Steef Fleur (Photographer) has a background in urban development.  In her photography she is attracted to contradicting subjects in our society. After working enough photographing events, reportages and sports, she preferably takes off to dive into subjects that caught her attention along the way. Cannabis became one of them in 2014 when she traveled to Humboldt County and she has kept her non-smokers curiosity ever since.

As soon as Nina Vera (journalist) could write, she wrote stories. She launched her career as an editor and later expanded into freelance journalism. She specialises in children's literature, reading in education and writing for young adults. She also writes fiction and has a special interest in the often extraordinary stories told by 'ordinary' people.

Martin van de Velde (journalist) is a journalist with a special interest in counter cultures. He has been reporting on the dutch dance scene from 2001 onwards working for some of the biggest newspapers and music platforms in the Netherlands.
